Where do I stand, and where do I go? All six rotations of the 5-1, 6-2, and 4-2 systems — serve-receive alignments and base positions, every one of them legal under the overlap rules.

The three systems, honestly compared

5-1: one setter, all six rotations: One setter runs the whole offense, front row and back row. When the setter is back row you get three front-row attackers, and the setter “penetrates” from the back court to the front-right target after serve contact — that's the dashed arrow in the diagrams. The price is the three rotations where your setter is stuck front row with only two attackers, and a setter who has to learn six different starting spots. It's the standard system in competitive ball, and the one to learn if you only learn one.
6-2: two setters, always setting from the back row: Two setters opposite each other in the lineup; whichever one is back row does the setting, and the front-row one plays as a right-side hitter. You always have three front-row attackers, which is the whole appeal. The cost is needing two capable setters and the constant setter hand-offs — and every serve-receive look involves a back-row setter releasing to target, so the stacking discipline matters in all six rotations.
4-2: two setters, setting from the front row: Two setters opposite each other, but here the front-row setter runs the offense — no back-court penetration to time, no release to beat the pass. That simplicity is why rec leagues and newer teams start here, usually with the classic five-player W serve-receive shown in the diagrams. The trade-off is only two front-row attackers, which stronger blocks eat alive. Teams tend to outgrow the 4-2 into a 6-2 or 5-1.

Reading the diagrams

Overlap rules apply only until serve contact. At the whistle, each front-row player must be nearer the net than their back-row counterpart, and left-to-right order must hold between neighbors — that's why serve-receive shapes look contorted. The moment the ball is served, everyone sprints to their base spots.
Serve-receive view shows the legal starting stack: passers in a line, hitters tucked at the net, and the setter cheating as close to the front-right target as the rules allow.
Base view shows where everyone settles during the rally — outsides left, middles in the middle, setter or opposite on the right. Defensive back-row assignments vary by team; this shows a common perimeter look.
The zone numbers (1–6) are the rally-start positions the rules care about. Rotate clockwise on every side-out: the player leaving zone 2 becomes the next server.
